How To Organize Your Laundry Room

We all know we need to separate our brightly colored clothes from our whites, so we don’t end up with a “everything’s pink” situation, but none of us want to spend so much time picking up clothes from around the house, sort each item, remember to empty every pocket, and then go through trying to find those few pesky stains somewhere in that pile of mess. Here are a few tricks to try and save yourself more time and a headache.

Specific bins

Start with having specific bins for certain items such as “colors” “whites” “towels” or other “bulky items”. You can label them with a simple pen and paper or get fun and have certain bins be certain colors, like a red bin for “colors” and a white bin for, well, you get it.

Get the family involved

If you’ve got a big family, try to have at least two bins per person to put in their rooms. If the kids are old enough, they can use this as an opportunity to try doing their own load of laundry and practice sorting out their clothes from the get-go.

Piggy Bank

Try having a piggy bank or bowl in the laundry room to store “lost treasures” left in those pockets. By the end of the month, you might be surprised by how many coins you collect.

Stain basket

Preferably, you would want to stain treat right away, but if you can’t get to it until later that night or the next morning, that’s still better than having the item get forgotten about at the bottom of the basket a week later. In your laundry room, put a small laundry basket right on top or near the machine, so you can treat the stain when you’re able.

The more you know

Put up a laundry symbol guide somewhere in your laundry room to help you always be prepared and know how to best tackle that stain. You can download the image below or click here to print out our laundry symbol guide.
